Peachy [RIP]
Peachy came home with me from the Petco in Los Gatos on December 17, 2008. She was in a cage with her sisters, who were all sorts of colors, but I have a thing for creamy hamsters, so what can I say? Also, one of her sisters was picking on her, so I wanted to save her from that.
Peachy was pretty relaxed with me from the start, though a little bit of a troublemaking punk at times. She likee to chew on everything, as if testing it all with her teeth. Unfortunately, she chewed some large holes into my couch cushions soon after coming home with me, though I did a bit to get her to stop that. Eventually she decided she likes to chew on the carpet in every corner of every room of my apartment, and did a bit of damage there. She never bit me though!
She really liked carrots and hamster "waffles" (Crispi). She didn't like running on the wheel as much, especially when she got bigger, but she did like running in her ball or loose. She would always try to get into the bathroom though, so I would have to block that off. She was also a good "falcon," sitting on my shoulder as I walked around.
When Peachy was a little over a year old, she developed a growth that had to be surgically removed. I was very worried, but she made it through ok, and the growth was a bit of fat, rather than a tumor. She seemed to be in very good spirits for some time after the surgery, and returned to her normal schedule.
However, she got sick the following month, and was prescribed antibiotics, which seemed to help her a lot. However, a few weeks later, she got sick again, and tests at the vet's office found that she had some form of cancer that had affected her liver. We scheduled a follow-up test to find out more, but she died before we made it home from the vet that day (March 2, 2010). She was resting in her carrier, so I think she fell asleep and just didn't wake up. I will miss her very much.
