Pee Wee
I brought this cute, little, black-eyed cream hamster boy home with me on September 27, 2008. He and his brother were snuggling up in their cage at a Petco in Mountain View, so it was hard to separate them, but he was just too cute to leave behind. He also let people pet him without getting angry.
He sneezed a bit on the way home and seemed confused by all the change so far, but with time (and a new friend), he calmed down quite a bit.
He was always such a sweet boy, full of such energy and always wanting to play, running around to chase Peachy or just explore the apartment.
Later in life, he didn't enjoy his wheel or ball as much, partly because he was spoiled by running around loose. I let him have the run of most of the apartment, though a few times he snuck into places he shouldn't have and got stuck (closets and the kitchen mostly).
He enjoyed the treats he got, especially the occasional fresh food, and quickly learned to chew on his skyhouse lid to try and get out. He was very happy when Fred's hamsters came to visit a few times, especially since he had new girls to chase around.
Pee Wee was always so healthy, outliving Peachy by several months. When he did eventually get sick after turning 2 years old, it was very hard. He had some stomach troubles, and I tried my best to nurse him through it. Unfortunately, he developed other problems, and eventually needed to be fed water and food by hand. When it was clear he was not doing well and wasn't going to pull through, I decided to have him put to sleep (September 29, 2010). It was a tough decision, but I didn't want him to suffer a long, drawn-out end.
Pee Wee was my own first hamster, and he lived a good long life during the 2 years he shared with me. He will be missed dearly.
